ID Your Target

We're constantly told that the Only Ones professional enough to be armed are police officers. Well, in this case at least it seems that the off-duty officer didn't take the time to identify his target-

An off-duty New Haven police officer shot and wounded his 18-year-old daughter, apparently mistaking her for an intruder after she sneaked out of their Stratford home and re-entered through the basement.

Woken by a motion sensitive light in his back-yard, the officer grabbed his service weapon and went to investigate. He "spotted someone a person moving in the basement bathroom, police said. He fired once, shooting the teen in the knee. The bullet traveled up her leg and lodged in her thigh area, police said."

Thankfully for him he didn't kill his daughter- she's listed as being critical but stable- but it raises an important point- be sure of what you're shooting at. Especially if you don't live alone. You'd think that a highly trained and professional police officer wouldn't just shoot first and ask questions later, right? Odd that he aimed so low as to hit her in the knee- an armed intruder might have been able to return fire after being wounded like that.

So, take care when searching your home for a possible intruder, take the time to ID the target just in case it is a loved one and it would probably help to have a light attached to your home defence gun too.

Maybe the special powers that are the exclusive domain of the "Only Ones" desert them when they've been off duty for a certain length of time?

Knee up to the thigh. Sounds a strange trajectory. She was raising her leg high, climbing over something or he was really really small.

What did that truck do to him?

I bet family discussions will be interesting for a while.

I have heard tell of small calibre bullets travelling along bone- usually it comes out when the .22LR is being discussed. Whether it's a myth or not I don't know. It does say it was his service weapon though- so I'm assuming it was at least a 9mm.

Strange indeed. It does say the incident occurred in the basement bathroom- maybe she was using the loo?
