Concept Art

I love comic book art and movie art- the design that goes into films. In fact, I think I probably like the Art Of books for the new Star Wars trilogy as much as I like the films themselves. I even like some films or games because of the designs in them, despite the fact that the story, dialogue and/or acting suck. A really interesting design can add so much to a film. The Rocketeer's helmet, Deckard's blaster in Blade Runner, the rocket ships in Buster Crabbe's Flash Gordon to name but a few.

It's also pretty cool to get a glimpse of the art behind the movies to see what things might have been like. For exa
mple, Christopher Lee's character in the Star Wars prequels was originally designed as a skin-head albino alien chick. They liked the concept so much that she was developed into another character for the Clone Wars cartoon- Asajj Ventress.

Anyway, the whole point of this post is to point you towards some concept art sites-

Ryan Church, who has worked on Star Wars and War of the Worlds. There's a great desktop wallpaper of his tripods in action here.

James Clyne, who also did some War of the Worlds work.

Then the incredible Daniel Simon- I can't quite recall how I came across his site but I sure am glad I did. His science fiction vehicle design is stunning- someone needs to make a film featuring his Ice Train right away. And be sure to also look at the Illustration section too- lovely clean lines to his work. Fantastic.

Finally, for now, there's Pablo Valbueno- not too much on the website just yet but some intriguing alien designs there to check out.

If you have any you'd like to recommend please do.
