I had a take on the film that, well, nobody liked.
There doesn't seem to be any animosity involved but I'm sure a lot of fans will be disappointed by the news. In his blog post, Whedon claims that, no, he didn't have any actress in mind for the part. Before adding this-

I had no idea who she was- and then caught her in an episode of Tru Calling I was watching tonight. Bit of a coincidence! Having seen her, I can see why she might be right for the role. If you're not familiar with her, here's a picture- but bear in mind it doesn't really do her justice.
