Yeah, American readers, that headline is right- one billion dollars of taxpayers money is being sent to border states to pay for the healthcare costs of illegal immigrants. One billion dollars. Of your money.
And you know what's worse? Under the rules, hospitals are NOT allowed to directly ask patients if they are "undocumented aliens". That would be "illegal alien" but undocumented sounds so much better don't you think? Bush may have been elected with a massive mandate but he seems to be intent on flushing it down the toilet- it was the Bush administration which "abandoned a proposal that would have required many hospitals to ask patients if they were U.S. citizens or legal immigrants". That was great of them wasn't it? To ignore what many Republican voters want? Dr. Mark McClellan, the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, said, ""In no circumstances are hospitals required to ask people about their citizenship status."
It does get even a little worse than that though. Worse than a billion dollars and no questions asked, you say? Well yes- the Department of Health and Human Services will also NOT provide information about illegal immigrants to law enforcement officials for use in "routine civil immigration proceedings." So illegal aliens are pretty much free to get all the healthcare they need and then go back to their illegal life in the USA. The policy is so screwed up that McClellan said that only in "rare cases" would information on illegal immigrants be used in criminal investigations- so no investigating the illegal activity of being an "undocumented" alien?
