The High Cost of Fruit

It's so hard to get by on only a little more than $300,000 dollars a year (excluding your husband's million-dollar plus income). I mean, fruit is just so darned expensive these days...Michelle Obama complains about hard it is to be numbered among America's wealthy elite-

"Now we’re keeping, like, a bowl of fresh fruit in the house. But you have to go to the fruit stand a couple of times a week to keep that fruit fresh enough that a six-year-old—she’s not gonna eat the pruney grape, you know. At that point it’s, like, ‘Eww!’ She’s not gonna eat the brown banana or the shrivelledy-up things. It’s got to be fresh for them to want it. Who’s got time to go to the fruit stand? Who can afford it, first of all?”

I always thought that you Americans had access to pretty much everything but even I can manage to keep my kids in apples, oranges, bananas, grapes and strawberries. I had no idea these were considered super-luxury items outside the price range of millionaires like the Obamas. And I'm amazed she has time to go talking to reporters when it's impossible to find the time to obtain fresh food for her daughter.

There's more, a "target rich environment", to this profile of Obama's wife. And it's very telling.
